CHAPMAN AIRS IT OUT FOR THIRD STRAIGHT WIN

ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University football team used a big second half for the second straight week to vault itself to victory over visiting Cal Lutheran University 44-30 at Wilson Field on Saturday night. The Panthers currently own a three-game winning streak for the first time since 1999 and, with a 4-2 record, have equaled their win total from 2006.

The Chapman offense passed for 449 yards and racked up just shy of 600 yards of total offense (596). Junior QB Eric Marty passed for 338 of those yards – his third consecutive game passing for over 300 – and threw four touchdowns to four different Panthers receivers. Senior WR Brandon Koller caught nine passes for 100 yards and a touchdown, while junior WR Harrison Dull led the Panthers with 120 yards on five receptions.

Chapman broke open a 17-16 halftime lead by out-scoring the Kingsmen 20-7 in the third quarter. Marty threw scoring passes to junior TE Matt Grager (4 yards), junior WR Nick Pierson (32 yards) and senior WR Lance Carter (18 yards) in the period to give Chapman a two-touchdown lead 37-23. Senior RB Ian Galanis led all rushers with 101 yards – his first 100-yard game of the season – and had two touchdowns for Chapman.

Cal Lutheran (3-3), which had its own three-game winning streak snapped, marched 90 yards in eight plays late in the fourth quarter, led by QB R.J. Benedict, to cut the Chapman lead to seven. However, the ensuing on-side kick was recovered by the Panthers, who scored once more before the game went final. Benedict, in his first start of the season, was 22-of-45 passing for 210 yards and one touchdown.

The Panthers dominated time of possession, owning over two-thirds of the clock (41:33). Although the 30 points is the second-most the Chapman defense has allowed this season, it forced Cal Lutheran to punt nine times and coaxed four turnovers. Junior CB Garrett Earls recorded his second interception of the season, recovered a fumble and led the Panthers with eight tackles.

With the win, Chapman snapped an eight-game losing streak to Cal Lutheran. The Panthers last beat the Kingsmen in 1997. Chapman wrapped up their 2007 home schedule with a 4-1 record and will go on the road for their final three games of the season, beginning with Pomona-Pitzer next Saturday, Oct. 27.
