PANTHERS COMEBACK IN SECOND HALF TO BEAT WHITTIER 38-20

ORANGE, Calif. – Trailing 20-10 late in the third quarter, the Chapman University football team rallied to score 28 unanswered points and defeated visiting Whittier College 38-20 at Wilson Field on Saturday night. Chapman WR Harrison Dull played a critical role in the comeback, catching three touchdown passes in a span of 6 minutes, 42 seconds in the second half and totaling 216 receiving yards in the game.

After Chapman’s offense stalled several times in the first half, Whittier took a 13-10 lead into halftime. At 9:26 in the third quarter, Whittier QB Josh Scurlock threw a 9-yard touchdown pass to Shawn Briggs to give the Poets a 10-point advantage. Then the Chapman offense – which had failed to earn a first down on five of its first seven drives – came to life.

Junior QB Eric Marty marched the Panthers’ offense 91 yards in six plays and hit Dull with a 6-yard touchdown pass to bring the Panthers within three, 20-17 with 1:48 remaining in the third quarter. The touchdown was Dull’s first of the season, but he wasn’t done. On Chapman’s next drive, Marty again found Dull in the back corner of the end zone with a 19-yard touchdown pass and the lead.

After the Chapman defense stuffed another Whittier advance and forced a fourth straight punt, the Panthers delivered the nail in the coffin: a 60-yard touchdown pass from Marty to Dull on their very next play to take a commanding 31-20 lead with 10:06 remaining in the game. Chapman (3-2) added another score on a 2-yard run by senior RB Ian Galanis in the closing minutes.

The second half comeback marks just the seventh time in Chapman history the Panthers have overcome a halftime deficit to win the game. Chapman improved to 3-1 at Wilson Field and climbed above .500 for the first time since beginning the season 1-0.

Dull’s three touchdown receptions ties a school record and his 216 receiving yards is a season-high. Marty who threw for over 300 yards for the second consecutive week, became the first Chapman quarterback to throw for 300 or more yards three times in his career. The junior was 18-of-34 passing for 303 yards with no interceptions and four touchdowns.

For Whittier (2-3), Scurlock finished 24-of-41 for 200 yards and two touchdowns. All-purpose back Anthony Pomponio gained a combined 106 yards on the ground and through the air with both a rushing and receiving touchdown for the Poets.

Panthers’ strong safety Kaeo Kane recorded 11 tackles, including a pair of quarterback sacks to lead the Chapman defense, which held Whittier to just 84 yards after its last touchdown early in the third quarter. Freshman CB Peter Antone recorded his first career interception in the second quarter which led to the Panthers only first half touchdown.
