ORANGE, Calif. – Chapman University’s offense snapped out of a recent slump in a big way on Saturday night. The Panthers totaled 479 yards of offense and defeated visiting Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges 37-8 while celebrating homecoming at Wilson Field. The 29-point margin of victory is Chapman’s largest in two seasons under head coach Bob Owens. Junior QB Eric Marty completed 21-of-26 passes for 326 yards and one touchdown and senior RB Ian Galanis ran for a pair of touchdowns to lead Chapman (2-2), which snapped a two-game losing streak. The Panthers had not scored in six consecutive quarters before scoring on their first two possessions of the game – including a 31-yard field goal by senior Brandon Koller. With 1:39 left in the first half, Marty connected with senior WR Lance Carter for a 68-yard touchdown pass to give Chapman a 17-0 halftime lead. Marty and the Panthers’ offense showed a knack for the big play all night with six plays (five passes, one run) of 30 or more yards. Among those big plays was a 44-yard completion to Koller; one his of 10 catches for a career-high 149 yards Midway through the third quarter, Chapman marched 80 yards on 12 plays and ate up over 5 minutes off the clock resulting in its third touchdown of the game. Galanis capped the drive with an 8-yard run for the score. The Panthers would score twice more in the second half to complete their biggest offensive performance since scoring 42 points against Pacific Lutheran in September 2006. Claremont (1-3) scored its only touchdown with 10:37 to go in the fourth quarter when Ryan Bickler caught a pass from Stags QB Ryan Larsen and ran 63 yards for the score. It was the third consecutive loss for Claremont this season. Until that Claremont touchdown, the Chapman defense had made a strong case for its first shutout of the season. The Panthers have held opponents to 12 points or fewer in three of their four games this year. Junior LB Wes Pinkston and junior DL Randy Dowdy each recorded quarterback sacks for the Panthers. Chapman improved to 2-1 at Wilson Field this season.
