FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University football team dropped its second consecutive game, losing to visiting University of Redlands 12-0 at Wilson Field on Saturday night. It was a battle of two nationally-ranked defenses, in which the Bulldogs pulled away in the second half to win their third straight game. Redlands (3-0) entered the game ranked No. 18 in Division III in scoring defense, having allowed just 17 points in its first two games of the season. Meanwhile, Chapman’s defense was among the top-35 in the nation in total yards allowed. Neither defense budged in the first half with the only points coming via a botched Chapman snap into the end zone that gave Redlands a safety early in the second quarter and a 2-0 halftime lead. The Bulldogs’ offense added to that lead late in the third quarter. Redlands benefited from good starting field position (its own 44 yard line) and drove 56 yards in five plays to score the game’s only touchdown and take a 9-0 lead with 2:58 remaining in the quarter. Bulldogs’ QB Dan Selway completed the drive with a 33-yard touchdown pass to Brian Putman. Redlands’ PK Joe MacMillan, who shook off two previous missed field goal attempts, closed out the scoring by nailing one last 42-yard try in the final minute of the game to give the Bulldogs a 12-0 victory. The Bulldogs’ shutout is its first of an opponent since 2002. The Chapman (1-2) defense held its opponent to just one touchdown and 12 points or less for the second time in three games. However, the Panthers’ turnover margin, which had been solid in their first two games, took a hit with three lost fumbles and an interception. The last time Chapman was shutout last October when it lost 17-0 against Whittier. The Panthers will host Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges next Saturday, Oct. 6 at Wilson Field. Chapman will celebrate homecoming that day. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
