CHAPMAN PLACES THREE PLAYERS ON ALL-WEST REGION TEAM

ORANGE, Calif. – Three members of Chapman University’s football team have been named to the Don Hansen’s Football Gazette All-West Region team for 2006. Senior DB Sean Ward highlights the trio, earning third team honors. Its three honorees are the most players Chapman has had named to the Football Gazette team.

Sophomore DB Chris Shiramizu and junior P Jeff Branson were also named to the West Region honorable mention team. It is a first time honor for all three players.

Ward finished his career in style, leading the Chapman defense with 69 tackles, a team-high three forced fumbles and five pass breakups. In fact, he ranked 14th in the nation in fumbles caused. The senior made two interceptions in his final game, including a 63-yard touchdown return to spark a Panthers rally.

Joining Ward in the secondary was Shiramizu, who finished right behind him with 57 tackles, including a team-best 39 solo tackles. The sophomore ranked 27th in Division III with 13 pass breakups and recovered two fumbles in 2006. The pair was part of a Chapman defense that allowed just 22.8 points per game, the lowest opponent scoring average since 1998.

Branson had a solid junior season as the team’s punter. The junior ranked in the top-50 in Division III with an average of 37.2 yards per punt. Nearly 20 percent of his punts landed inside the opponent’s 20-yard line and he was a perfect 15-for-15 in extra-point attempts.
