FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

SEASON ENDS AS CHAPMAN HAS NO ANSWER FOR EMORY BATS

GRAND CHUTE, Wis. –  One minute the Panthers were trying to repeat history, the next they were trying to stop the bleeding. The Chapman University baseball season came to a screeching halt in the early innings of its 16-7 loss to Emory University (Ga.), which eliminated the Panthers from the NCAA Division III World Series at Time Warner Cable Field at Fox Cities Stadium on Sunday afternoon. Chapman placed fifth overall and finished 41-8, setting a school record for victories in a season.

In 2003, the Panthers fell into the loser's bracket on the second day of the championship tournament and defeated Emory on their way to a national title. On Sunday, Chapman took to the field trying to take its first step toward repeating the feat. Emory had other thoughts, jumping all over Chapman for seven runs in the first, four more in the second and two in the third. Before the Panthers could get through their batting order once, they were down 13-0.

“You’ve just got to give credit to Emory. They came out swinging the bats. They hit a lot of balls hard and they put us in a big hole,” said Chapman coach Tom Tereschuk. “We finally got them stopped and I was proud that our guys were able to regroup and mount some sort of a comeback.”

Chapman RHP Kurt Yacko provided seven innings of damage control, limiting the Eagles to single runs in the fourth, seventh and ninth innings, but deficit was too much to surmount. Emory pounded 25 hits, including five for extra-bases and advanced to Monday's final four.

The Panthers staged a modest comeback with three runs in both the fourth and fifth innings. Sophomore IF Ryan Cavan led off the fifth with a solo homer to right-center - to the deepest part of the park - and sophomore IF Patrick Ohail tripled in a run. Senior OF Tyler Dean - CU's career leader in doubles - fittingly hit two more doubles to end a fine career. Sophomore IF Tristan Phillips was 2-for-4 with an RBI double in the seventh.
