ABCA NAMES DRAG, FOUR OTHERS TO ALL-WEST REGION TEAM

ORANGE, Calif. –  Senior RHP Devin Drag was named West Region Pitcher of the Year by the American Baseball Coaches Association, headlining a cast of five Chapman University baseball players named to the All-West Region team this week. Drag is currently 15-0, leads the nation in victories, and was named to the first team for the second straight year. The Pitcher of the Year award has gone to Chapman each of the past three seasons with Buddy Klovstad earning the award in 2005 and 2006.

This season, Drag set a new school record for wins in a single season and in his career (29-2). He posted a 2.24 ERA and 96 strikeouts in over 112 innings pitched. Joining Drag on the first team are fellow right-handers Wayde Kitchens and Kurt Yacko. Kitchens had a breakthrough season as a sophomore, compiling a 12-1 record with a school record 115 strikeouts, five complete games and two shutouts. Another sophomore, Yacko was named to the utility position, ranking among the top-10 nationally in saves and strikeouts, while batting .400 with six homers and 45 RBI.

Sophomore IF Ryan Cavan was named the shortstop on the All-Region second team after leading the Panthers with a .403 batting average, 54 runs and 14 stolen bases. He was solid defensively, as well, with a .950 fielding percentage. Cavan earned the honor for the second time in his career.

One of Chapman’s all-time greats earned third team honors for the second straight year. Senior OF Tyler Dean will leave Chapman ranked among the top-three in school history in hits, runs and doubles and currently ranks fifth with 18 home runs. He batted .328 with a team-high eight homers and 47 RBI as a senior in 2007.
