PANTHER SHORTSTOP NAMED DIII INDEPENDENTS STUDENT-ATHLETE OF THE MONTH
ORANGE, Calif. – Chapman University sophomore Ryan Cavan has been named April Student-Athlete of the Month by the Association of Division III Independents. Cavan, a shortstop on the Panthers' No. 2 nationally-ranked baseball team, hit .462 (18-for-39) in 11 games last month. Cavan hit safely in all but one game in April; he went 0-for-1 with three walks in that contest. Cavan collected six doubles, a triple, three home runs and 12 runs batted in. He committed just one error in 59 chances (.983 fielding percentage), helping Chapman to a 10-1 record during the month. The Panthers finished the regular season 35-5 with Cavan as the team's leading hitter, batting .417 with five homers and 39 RBI. The Association of Division III Independents consists of 25 Division III independent institutions that have joined together to recognize student-athletes at independent institutions, and to provide exempted postseason championship competition in nine sports in 2006-07. The Association recognizes outstanding athletic achievements of its student-athletes on a weekly, monthly and annual basis. The Association provides statistical services for its members in seven sports. In addition, it also will announce All-Independent teams at the conclusion of nine sports this year.
