ORANGE, Calif. – In the second game of a pivotal three-game series with postseason implications, the Chapman University baseball team hammered out 10 runs on 14 hits and defeated visiting George Fox University (Ore.) 10-2 at Hart Park on Saturday night. The Panthers have now taken the first two games of the series and improved to 34-5 overall. No. 2-ranked Chapman scored at least one run in each of the first seven innings in support of RHP Wayde Kitchens. The sophomore scattered six hits and allowed just one earned run while striking out 12 batters in seven innings of work. Kitchens improved to 10-1 this season to become the 11th 10-game winner in the school’s Division III history. The Panthers plated single runs in each of the first four innings, until junior DH Stuart Hyman belted his second home run of the season to leadoff the fifth. Sophomores Patrick Ohail and Matt Pearson followed with back-to-back singles to chase George Fox starter Nick Bratney from the game. The Panthers scored once more in the inning to build a 6-2 lead. After scoring a pair of unearned runs in the sixth inning, Chapman scored two more in the seventh when freshman OF Jake Hurst tripled in a run and then scored on an RBI infield single by junior IF Kyle Redding. Sophomore IF Ryan Cavan was 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Eight different Panthers collected RBI in the game. Both teams will close out the series and the regular season with a noon matinee on Sunday at Hart Park. Probable starters will be GFU: RHP Josh Burch (4-1) vs. CU: RHP Matt Ricatto (1-0). At 34-5, Chapman has clinched its best regular season record since 1999 when the Panthers finished 37-3.
