FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

NO. 2 CHAPMAN – EFFICIENT AND CONSISTENT – WINS AGAIN

ORANGE, Calif. –  The Chapman University baseball team has been consistent if nothing else this season. In fact, the Panthers haven’t budged from their No. 2 preseason national ranking in the coaches poll, holding the same spot in this week’s poll. That consistency was on display once again as Chapman defeated SCIAC-leading Pomona-Pitzer 6-2 at Hart Park on Wednesday in a potential postseason preview.

The Panthers (31-5) received solid starting pitching, once again, from sophomore RHP Kurt Yacko, who scattered seven hits and struck out 10 batters in eight innings and gave up just two unearned runs. With the win, Yacko improved to 5-1 this season.

Chapman also got timely hitting throughout the lineup as eight of the starting nine collected at least one hit. The Panthers were 6-for-10 with runners in scoring position and got four two-out RBI, including an RBI double by sophomore IF Tristan Phillips to cap a two-run second inning. Phillips also added a sacrifice fly in the sixth. Sophomore C Matt Pearson was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and freshman OF Jake Hurst reached base three times and scored a run.

The Panthers travel to Cal State San Marcos this weekend before closing the regular season with a three-game series with rival George Fox (Ore.), May 4-6 at Hart Park.
