‘SENIOR DAY’ IS A SPLIT WITH POMONA

ORANGE, Calif. – D3baseball.com’s No. 1-ranked Chapman University split a Saturday doubleheader with No. 11-ranked Pomona Pitzer College (27-7), ending the Panthers’ record 20-game winning streak in their season’s last home games at Hart Park. Chapman underclassmen stole Game 1 of ‘Senior Day’ when junior IF Tristan Phillips’ solo homerun broke open a 5-5 ballgame in the fourth inning. The Panthers then recorded their first loss since Feb. 29 in Game 2 when Pomona’s Tom Church (6-2) held them to one run and seven hits. 

Game 1: Chapman 7, Pomona Pitzer 5
Senior RHP Ryan Clear (8-1) recovered from a four-run jam in the fourth inning after the Panther offense, led by senior OF Mike Vass, picked up three runs to tie the game at 5-5 in the fifth inning. Vass’s two-run double added to his team-high batting average (.385) and on-base percentage (.479).

Sagehen starter David Colvin (9-1) was handed his first loss after Phillips’ fifth-inning solo home run made the Panther a triple short of hitting a cycle.

Junior IF Kurt Yacko once again proved his All-America status in the batter’s box and on the mound, going 4-for-5 and earning his 11th save of the year. 

Game 2: Pomona Pitzer 6, Chapman 1
In the fourth inning, the Sagehens stormed freshman RHP Jordan Sigman (8-1) and Panther clubhouse, scoring four runs on four straight singles with the bases loaded. Pomona scored again in the fifth and seventh innings to shut down Chapman’s chances at stretching their winning streak to 21 games.

The Panthers were held to one run in the fourth inning, the last career home run at Hart Park for senior IF Stuart Hyman.

Chapman University (28-3) will finish the regular season with six away games beginning at Cal State East Bay on April 26. Game time is scheduled at 1 p.m.
