ORANGE, Calif. – Chapman University’s baseball team won its season-best sixth consecutive game, defeating visiting Whittier College 9-5 at Hart Park on Wednesday night. All-America right-hander Buddy Klovstad survived a rough first three innings to earn his 10th victory of the season for Chapman (23-7). Klovstad became the first 10-game winner (10-1) in Division III, allowing six hits and striking out eight Poets in eight innings of work. The senior struggled through the first three innings, allowing five runs, including four in the third. Klovstad didn’t allow another hit from the fourth inning on and retired 12 of 13 batters at one point in the game. He becomes just the second Division III pitcher in Chapman history to record back-to-back 10-win seasons – the first since Jeff Blitstein in 1998-99. After Whittier (18-15-1) jumped out to a 5-1 lead, the Panthers came storming back in the bottom of the third inning with four runs of their own. Junior centerfielder Tyler Dean hit his team-leading sixth home run of the season, a three-run blast, to aid the Chapman cause. The Panthers took the lead for good in the fourth when Dean doubled in a run and scored on an RBI single by senior catcher John Alexander. Dean and Alexander combined to drive in six runs for Chapman. The game marked Chapman’s 16th straight home game – a scheduling fluke due to rainouts. The Panthers have posted a 13-3 record during that stretch.
