FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
ORANGE, Calif. – When you’re hot, you’re hot and the Chapman University baseball team is hot. Even as the offense was held to a season-low four hits, the Panthers won their 16th consecutive game, a 4-0 shutout over visiting University of La Verne at Hart Park on Thursday afternoon. Junior RHP Wayde Kitchens went the distance, throwing Chapman’s first complete game shutout of the year, a three-hitter. Chapman (24-2) pushed across three runs in the fifth inning to snap a scoreless tie. Freshman OF John Semel delivered a two-run single with the bases loaded to give Kitchens all the run support he’d need. Senior IF Kyle Redding followed with an RBI groundout in the inning, and then slugged his second homer of the season in the eighth to give the Panthers an insurance run. Kitchens improved to 4-0 in his fourth start since coming back from a shoulder injury. The right-hander struck out six in the game, including striking out the side in order in the ninth, on his way to his sixth career complete game and third shutout. La Verne (17-11-1) leadoff batter Jack Mehl led off the game with a single and reached third, but that was the closest the Leopards would come to scoring. The loss snapped a five-game winning streak for La Verne. Game 2 of the three-game weekend series will be Friday at 3 p.m. in La Verne.
