ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University baseball team rallied from a 5-0 sixth inning deficit to beat visiting Biola University 6-5 on a misplayed grounder in the bottom of the ninth inning. The win gives the No. 7-ranked Panthers their sixth win in seven games, all at home. Biola (23-7), ranked No. 4 in the nation in NAIA, took a 4-0 lead in the fourth inning on back-to-back-to-back doubles by Nick Dietzen, Hawkins Gebbers and Tony Gonzalez. The Eagles added a fifth run in the sixth on an Eric Bowman RBI single. The Panthers rallied for three runs in the bottom of the sixth, loading the bases for freshman first baseman Patrick Ohail, who cleared them with a three-run double to the wall in left-center. In the eighth, Chapman (20-7) added another run on a wild pitch, and then tied the game on an RBI single by senior John Alexander. Freshman Kurt Yacko led off the ninth with a walk and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt before scoring the winning run on an error. Yacko, Ohail and senior outfielder Brian Brubaker each had two hits for Chapman. The Chapman bullpen was outstanding, allowing just one run and three hits in six innings of work. Yacko, who pitched two perfect innings and struck out three, earned his first career victory. Freshman right-hander Wayde Kitchens pitched a perfect seventh inning with two strikeouts. The comeback victory is Chapman’s fifth this season.
