ORANGE, Calif. – Chapman University’s junior All-American Wayde Kitchens held visiting Cal State East Bay to two runs in Friday afternoon’s 10-3 victory at Hart Park. The win was No. 200 for Panthers’ head coach Tom Tereschuk in his collegiate head coaching career. Tereschuk has a .772 winning percentage (200-59) in five-plus seasons at Chapman. The Panthers continue to prowl with a 13-game winning streak, a run only triumphed by Chapman’s 1999 season with 17 consecutive wins. Kitchens’ had seven strikeouts limited the Pioneers to six hits in eight innings and improved to 3-0 on the mound this season. The right-hander allowed his first earned run of the season, as well as an unearned run, on three singles in the first inning. The Panther offense tied the Pioneers in the first with two runs of their own with RBI singles from junior Kurt Yacko and senior Stuart Hyman. Hyman extended his team-best hitting streak to 10 games with a 2-for-3 performance. Chapman bats solved East Bay starter Matt Vieira with 13 hits in his five-plus innings for the Pioneers. Senior OF Mike Vass sealed the victory for Chapman with a three-run homerun in the eighth inning. Vass leads the team with eight homers this season. Chapman captured the first in a three-game weekend series with the Pioneers, having won three of four in the series last year. The series between Chapman and East Bay resumes on Saturday at Hart Park at 1 p.m. Sunday’s game is scheduled at noon.
