ORANGE, Calif. – The No. 10 Chapman University men’s baseball team suffered a tough loss against its in-region rival, No. 6 Cal State East Bay, as it dropped a 3-2 decision on Friday afternoon at Hart Park. In the first game of a three-game series that has significant playoff implications, the game was a pitcher’s dual until the end. The Pioneers scratched out single runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings to take 3-0 lead into the ninth. Chapman (17-7) rallied back for two runs when sophomore outfielder Jarrod Sammet hit a two-run home run, his first of the season. However, the Panthers’ rally ended abruptly when Cal State East Bay (17-4) left-hander Matt Vieira came in to retire the final two batters for the save. Both teams were impressive on the mound as neither pitcher allowed a base hit until the fourth inning. The Pioneers’ right-hander Sean O’Dowd held the Panthers scoreless into the ninth, striking out nine Chapman batters to earn the victory. Chapman left-hander Billy Sulentor was pinned with the loss despite allowing just six hits and three runs in six-plus innings of work.
