FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
ORANGE, Calif. – With respect to pitchers, a perfect game for a team – or rather, a game played perfectly – may look a lot like Chapman University’s win on Saturday. The Panthers did everything right scoring 19 runs on 20 hits, pitching a three-hit shutout and playing error-free defense in defeating visiting Wesleyan University (Conn.) 19-0 at Hart Park. Chapman’s (19-3) first six batters reached base and scored in the first inning and the Panthers built a 10-0 lead by the end of two innings. Sophomore IF Kurt Yacko doubled in a pair of runs in the first inning and finished the game 3-for-4 with four RBI. The Panthers weren’t done there. Freshman OF Jake Hurst, making just his second career start, hit a solo home run in the fourth and doubled in two more runs in a four-run fifth inning. Chapman struck for four more runs in the seventh thanks, in part, to junior OF Steve Fraser’s two-run double – his second double of the game. On the mound, RHP Wayde Kitchens was nearly untouchable. The sophomore improved to 5-1 with his first career shutout, a three-hitter with 12 strikeouts. Kitchens allowed just one hit through the first six innings, including retiring 10 batters in a row during one stretch. Chapman improved to 13-2 at Hart Park this season and will now embark on a five-game stretch of road games that includes a three-game series with rival Cal State East Bay in Hayward next weekend.
