FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

MARQUEE EVENT: NO. 2 CHAPMAN BESTS NO. 3 MONTCLAIR STATE

ORANGE, Calif. –  This game may have been circled on the calendar a year ago, but when Collegiate Baseball released its preseason NCAA Division III rankings in December it became an even bigger event: No. 2 Chapman University hosting No. 3 Montclair State. To add to the drama, the Redhawks drove 377 miles from their Spring Break destination in Chandler, Ariz. to play just the one game against the Panthers. Both teams reached the World Series in 2006, but did not face each another in the playoffs.

Chapman snapped a 2-2 tie with four runs in the fourth inning and plated four more in the fifth to build a 10-2 lead, and then hung on to beat Montclair State 10-6 at Hart Park on Saturday afternoon.

Senior RHP Devin Drag improved to 8-0 this season, allowing seven hits and striking out five in six innings. Senior RHP Matt Ricatto pitched three innings of relief to earn his third save.

Freshman OF Ryan Prechtl set the table for Chapman (18-2) all day, reaching base and scoring three times. His two-run double in the fourth capped the first of the Panthers’ big innings. Sophomore IF Kurt Yacko was 3-for-4 with a pair of runs and a stolen base.

For Montclair State (6-4), C Jeff Miller finished 2-for-5 with a home run and two RBI. The Redhawks, who had 11 hits, left 11 runners on base in the game.

Chapman’s 18-2 start matches the 1999 team for best 20-game start in school history.
