RUTGERS-CAMDEN SOLVES KLOVSTAD WITH THREE-RUN FIRST

ORANGE, Calif. – Three singles and a walk. That’s all it took to bring an end to All-America right-hander Buddy Klovstad’s 18-game winning streak on Thursday afternoon. Visiting Rutgers University-Camden (N.J.) defeated the senior pitcher and the Chapman University baseball team with those three hits and a walk in a three-run first inning, hanging on for a 3-2 victory over the No. 4-ranked Panthers at Hart Park.

After the first inning, Klovstad was lights out, settling in to allow just three hits and striking out nine batters in his second complete game of the season. But he was pinned with his first loss since 2004, when Chapman failed to cash in with runners in scoring position in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings. The Panthers had nine hits, but stranded 13 runners on base in their second consecutive home loss.

Freshmen infielders Kurt Yacko and Patrick Ohail each had a pair of hits, including RBI singles in the second and third innings, respectively.

Klovstad’s streak of 18 straight victories is a Chapman record. He was one victory short of tying for ninth place in NCAA Division III history. The streak began with an 8-1 win over Menlo on April 24, 2004 and included the Panthers’ only playoff victory that season, a 6-2 win over La Verne at the West Region playoffs. He followed that with a 10-0 performance in 2005 that earned him All-America honors, and then began this season 6-0 before falling on Thursday – his third ever collegiate loss.

He currently has a win-loss record of 21-3, placing him fourth in Chapman’s Division III history in victories and first in winning percentage among pitchers with 20-plus decisions.
