ORANGE, Calif. – The No. 4-ranked Chapman University men’s baseball team was defeated by No. 20 Kean University (N.J.) 4-3 at Hart Park, ending the Panthers’ four-game winning streak on Tuesday night. With the game tied 3-3 in the seventh inning, Kean got a lead off home run from freshman outfielder Mike Shymanski that proved to be the game winner for the Cougars. It was Shymanski earlier, who gave life to the game in the fourth inning when his RBI single, followed by a run-scoring single by Perry Schatzow, helped give the Cougars an early 3-0 lead. Chapman (14-5) answered back at the bottom of the fourth with two runs, highlighted by freshman infielder Patrick Ohail’s RBI double which cut the Kean (4-4) lead to 3-2. Chapman appeared buoyant in the sixth inning when they tied the game on an RBI single by sophomore outfielder Steve Fraser that plated senior Brian Brubaker. However, it was Shymanski’s heroics in the top of the seventh inning that gave the Cougars the win. Junior right-hander Devin Drag relieved starter Billy Sulentor in the eighth inning. Sulentor struck out nine batters but suffered his first loss of the season (2-1). Sulentor’s consecutive scoreless innings streak was also halted at 26 innings when the Cougars scored with two outs in the fourth. Drag continued to impress this season, striking out three batters and allowing no hits in 1.2 innings. Drag is averaging nearly a strikeout and a half per inning and still has a 0.00 ERA in 23 innings.
