ORANGE, Calif. - Things appear to be falling into place for the Chapman University men’s baseball team as it capitalized on a five-run inning Saturday afternoon to defeat Montclair State 7-1 at Hart Park. With four consecutive wins under their belt and winning eight of their last nine games, the Panthers' pitching has significantly come alive in their last nine games, lowering their ERA by over a run and a half. Chapman’s (14-4) five-run inning in the bottom of the fifth helped gain the momentum they needed to prevail. Highlighted by sophomore outfielder Steve Fraser’s leadoff home run, sophomore infielder Tyler Norman shortly followed with a two-run double. Junior outfielder Tyler Dean, who went 2-for-4, added a solo home run in the seventh inning giving him a team-high five homers this season. Sophomore Jarrod Sammet finished the game with a pair of hits including a RBI single that gave Chapman a 6-0 lead in the bottom of the sixth. Junior right-hander Devin Drag earned his third win of the season by allowing only three hits in six innings. Drag hasn’t allowed an earned run in 21.1 innings this season. Freshman right-hander Kurt Yacko took over in the seventh inning and struck out four batters in his first collegiate save. While lowering its ERA to a more Chapman-like 2.91, the pitching staff has allowed just three earned runs in their last 38 innings.
