PANTHERS KEEP ROLLING RIGHT INTO MARCH

ORANGE, Calif. –  The Chapman University baseball team began March the same way it left off in February. The Panthers cruised to a 16-5 victory over visiting University of Redlands on Friday afternoon at Hart Park. Chapman pounded out 19 hits (18 singles) on its way to a 13th win in 14 games.

As it’s done in seven of the past eight games, the Chapman (13-1) offense struck in the first inning and didn’t let up. The Panthers scored four times in the inning thanks to RBI singles from Ryan Cavan and Stuart Hyman and a sacrifice fly by Patrick Ohail. Cavan would finish the game 4-for-4 with three RBI.

However, sophomore IF Kurt Yacko one-upped Cavan as hitting star of the day. Yacko led off the second inning with his team-best fifth home run of the year, followed by four singles to finish 5-for-5 with three RBI and three runs scored. Yacko becomes just the sixth Chapman player in the school’s Division III history to collect five hits in a game. He’s currently leading the team with a .483 average.

The Panthers scored at least once in each of the first six innings, including three runs in the third and exploding for six more in the sixth. Junior IF Kyle Redding also drove in three runs for Chapman.

All of the offensive support was welcomed by senior RHP Devin Drag who improved to 5-0 this season with seven innings of six-hit ball. Drag allowed just one earned run and struck out four.

The loss snapped Redlands’ (6-3) four-game winning streak. Ryan Garcia and Kyle Gardner had two hits apiece for the Bulldogs.

Chapman extended its winning streak to six games and is a perfect 8-0 at home this season.
