ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University baseball team won its fifth consecutive game on Friday afternoon defeating McMurry University (Texas) 8-1 at Hart Park. Klovstad allowed just five hits and struck out seven, while improving to 3-0 this season. Chapman (6-1) scored a pair of unearned runs in the first inning and another in the second when freshman shortstop Kurt Yacko hit his first home run of the season. The Panthers added four more runs in the seventh inning, including RBI singles by seniors John Alexander and Brian Brubaker, giving Chapman an 8-1 lead. Alexander finished the game 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored, while Brubaker led Chapman with three hits and two RBI. McMurry (0-1), in its season opener, was led by right fielder Greg Erickson, who was 3-for-4 with the Indians only run. The Indians led 4-1 in the second game of the scheduled doubleheader thanks to a three-run home run by Brent Voorhees, but the game was suspended in the top of the fourth inning due to rain. The game will resume on Saturday at noon, followed by the third and final game of the series.
