SERIES SWEEP COMES IN FORM OF LUCKY SEVENS FOR PANTHERS

ORANGE, Calif. - The Chapman University baseball team swept its three-game series against visiting Cal Lutheran University by taking both games in a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Hart Park. The Panthers took Game 1, 7-3 with three seventh inning home runs. Chapman made it a clean sweep in Game 2 after a two-run single by freshman IF Bobby Evers solidified a 7-4 win.

Game 1: Chapman 7, Cal Lutheran 3
The Panthers got the ball rolling by scoring three runs in the first three innings, but the Cal Lutheran offense fired back with two runs in the sixth, capitalizing on two errors and tying the game 3-3.

Chapman (8-1) used the long ball to regain the lead in the seventh inning. Senior OF Mike Vass broke the tie with a two-run homer to left to make it 5-3. Sophomore IF Jake Hurst and freshman John Semel then followed with back-to-back home runs to give the Panthers four runs in the inning. Hurst's home run was inside-the-park, while Semel's was his second in consecutive pinch-hit at-bats. Vass finished 3-for-3 with two runs. Chapman has hit at least one home run in seven of their first nine games of the season.

Junior IF/RHP Kurt Yacko (3-0) earned his third win of the season by allowing no hits in 3 1/3 innings of relief. Yacko maintains a team-low 0.59 ERA in eight appearances on the mound.

Game 2: Chapman 7, Cal Lutheran 4
Cal Lutheran (2-4) scored four times in the second inning on doubles by C Chris Brouillete and IF Landon Smith. The Panthers rallied for a pair of runs in the fifth inning on back-to-back doubles by senior IF Kyle Redding and sophomore OF Ryan Prechtl. Chapman finally took the lead in the sixth inning the rookie Evers' two-run single. Evers went 2-for-3 at the plate in the first start of his collegiate career. Vass also went deep for the second straight game in the fourth inning, his fourth of the year.

Chapman’s offense sealed the deal by scoring two runs in the seventh inning on a single by Semel and on one of two Cal Lutheran errors.

Freshman RHP Jordan Sigman (2-0) settled in after the four-run second scattering eight hits over eight innings to pick up his second win of the season.
