DEAN’S CYCLE LIFTS CHAPMAN OVER POMONA-PITZER

ORANGE, Calif. – Junior outfielder Tyler Dean became the first Panther since 1999 to hit for the cycle, helping the Chapman (3-1) defeat visiting Pomona-Pitzer Colleges 7-2 at Hart Park on Friday afternoon. Dean’s two-run homer in the fourth inning capped a seven-run outburst in the first four innings and made a winner out of senior right-hander Buddy Klovstad for the 14th straight time.

Although Klovstad was not his sharpest, allowing seven hits in five innings to the Sagehens, he did strikeout eight batters to improve to 2-0 this season. The win is Klovstad’s 14th in a row dating back to 2004. Senior right-hander Gabe Bonfanti closed it out with four shutout innings for his first save of the season.

The Panthers provided plenty of run support for Klovstad. Freshman outfielder Steve Fraser hit a two-run home run in the second inning – his first career homer – to put Chapman on the board for good. In the third inning, senior catcher John Alexander tripled home Dean, and then scored on a Patrick Ohail RBI single. Alexander finished the game 3-for-4 with two runs scored. Fraser added a sacrifice fly in the fourth, giving him three RBI.

Down 2-0, Pomona-Pitzer (3-3) rallied for one run when Ben Shanker tripled home Brandon Huerta in the third inning. That was as close as the Sagehens would come. Michael Joannides was 2-for-4 with a double for Pomona.
