YACKO STARS AT THE PLATE AND ON THE MOUND IN CHAPMAN SWEEP

ORANGE, Calif. –  Sophomore Kurt Yacko went 3-for-4 with a home run and a triple, then pitched 3 1/3 scoreless innings of relief to earn his first win of the season to lead Chapman to a 9-2 win in the first game of a doubleheader sweep over visiting Whittier College at Hart Park on Saturday. Yacko then slammed the door shut in the Panthers second win, striking out the side in order to earn his first save in a 4-1 victory.

Yacko’s homer was his second in as many days after hitting his first of the season at Whittier on Friday afternoon in Chapman’s season opener. He also drove in four runs on Saturday.

Freshman RHP Matt Luzar pitched eight solid innings for the Panthers in the second game, allowing a single run on four hits and striking out seven. Junior IF Kyle Redding was 3-for-3 with a pair of RBI in the win, which gave Chapman a three-game sweep over the Poets in the weekend series.

In the first game, Chapman (3-0) pounded 12 hits and totaled 39 hits in the three games. Sophomore IF Ryan Cavan and senior OF Tyler Dean each had two hits and scored a run and sophomore IF Tristan Phillips hit a three-run homer in the seventh to seal the win.

Three Chapman pitchers (including Yacko), held Whittier (0-3) to just three hits in the first game.
