ORANGE, Calif. – The Chapman University baseball team built a 10-0 lead, then withstood a Poets rally that included seven runs in the final two innings to defeat the Whittier College 10-7 in the 2008 season opener at Hart Park on Friday afternoon. The Panthers capitalized on six Whittier errors and scored all of their runs in the first five innings. Junior C Matt Pearson had an RBI double and scored a run for Chapman (1-0) in a three-run second inning that put the Panthers ahead for good. The Panthers broke the game wide open in the fifth with six runs, including a two-run double by senior IF Kyle Redding. Redding went 2-for-3 with three RBI and two runs scored while sophomore OF Ryan Hall was 2-for-2 with a pair of runs. Senior DH Stuart Hyman also had a two-run single in the sixth to pad the lead in support of sophomore RHP Matt Luzar who allowed just one hit in 5 1/3 innings for his first win of the year. The Whittier (0-1) bats came to life in the eighth inning as the Poets pounded out 11 hits and seven runs before the game went final. Robbie Smith had a two-run single in the eighth for Whittier. In the ninth, Brian Carmona homered and Ryan Crawford hit a two-run single to make the score 10-7. Junior RHP Kurt Yacko pitched the final out to earn his first save of the season.
