FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE PANTHERS BEATEN ON FIRST INNING HOME RUN TYLER, Texas – The Chapman University softball team lost its opener 3-1 to the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor (Texas) in the NCAA Division III West Region postseason tournament at UT-Tyler Ballpark on Thursday afternoon. The Panthers face elimination on Friday when they play at noon (central) against the loser of tonight’s final game between top-seeded Louisiana College and No. 4 seed Linfield College (Ore.). The game was decided early when Mary Hardin-Baylor IF Megan Bohne hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the first inning off Chapman senior RHP Jennifer Winford. The homer followed a leadoff walk and a catcher’s obstruction call that put two runners out without the benefit of a hit. The Crusaders never seriously threatened after that as Winford settled in to allow just three hits over the next five innings. However, the Chapman bats were quieted by UMHB right-hander Kelsey Greeson who scattered just five hits of her own and allowed one unearned run. The Panthers scored that in the fourth when senior IF Catherine Hall led off the inning by reaching on an error and then scored on senior C Amanda Campbell’s double to left. Campbell went 2-for-3 to lead Chapman offensively. If the No. 6-seeded Panthers are to rally from the loser’s bracket, they will need to win two games a day for the rest of the tournament, beginning at noon on Friday. No. 3 seed Mary Hardin-Baylor will face the winner of Texas-Tyler/La Verne on Friday at 2 p.m. ### Game stats available online: |
