CHAPMAN REMAINS UNBEATEN IN PLAYOFFS WITH 7-2 WIN OVER TRINITY
ORANGE, Calif. - Chapman University remained the only undefeated team in the NCAA Division III West Region championships, defeating No. 2 Trinity University (Tex.) 7-2 at Hart Park on Thursday night. National ERA leader Devin Drag took a no-hitter into the sixth inning and earned his fifth complete game of the season; a five-hit, 10-strikeout performance for the Panthers.
Chapman (29-10) advanced in the winner's bracket as the only unbeaten left in the five-team field. The Panthers will play the winner of Trinity/George Fox on Friday night at 7 p.m.
Chapman again provided plenty of offense for its starting pitcher, pounding out double-digit hits for the second straight game. First baseman Patrick Ohail led the way with three hits and two runs scored. The Panthers exploded for four runs in the eighth inning, capitalizing on a hit batter, a walk and a fielding error to turn a 3-1 lead into a 7-1 lead. Center fielder Steve Fraser went 2-for-3 with a pair of runs for Chapman, while second baseman Kyle Redding drove in a pair in the game.
That was plenty of run support for Drag, who flirted with a no-hitter until Trinity third baseman Bobby Zabor singled off the first base bag with two outs in the sixth. Drag improved to 8-1 this season and still remains the Division III ERA lead with a 0.85 mark. The Tigers finally got to the junior right-hander for single runs in the seventh and eighth innings. Third baseman Blake Holman doubled and scored on a groundout for Trinity's first run of the game.
Trinity (34-12) right-hander Adam Frey allowed just three runs in six innings, but suffered his fourth loss of the year (6-4). The Tigers will face George Fox (Ore.) on Friday at noon in an elimination game.
