FOUR-RUN FIRST INNING PACES CHAPMAN OVER EAST BAY
ORANGE, Calif. - Chapman University made it three-of-four against Independent rival Cal State East Bay, sending the Pioneers into the loser’s bracket with a 7-2 win in the first round of the NCAA Division III West Region championships at Hart Park on Wednesday night. All-America right-hander Buddy Klovstad tied Chapman’s career (Division III) wins record with his 27th victory (27-3).
The Panthers, seeded No. 3 in the tournament, scored four runs in the first inning off East Bay starter Sean O’Dowd. Chapman third baseman Tyler Dean doubled in a run, first baseman Patrick Ohail tripled in another and designated hitter Tyler Norman singled in the fourth run for the Panthers in the inning. Chapman (28-10) scored two more in the third on RBIs from Kyle Redding and Jarrod Sammet to build a 6-1 lead after three innings. Ohail and left fielder Brian Brubaker were 2-for-4 each with two runs scored.
Klovstad improved to 3-0 in his postseason career and earned his third complete game of the season. He scattered eight hits and just two earned runs to win his 12th game of the year (12-1), which leads the nation.
Chapman roughed up O’Dowd to avenge for the Panthers only loss to East Bay (24-11) on March 31. In that game, O’Dowd limited Chapman to just five hits as the Pioneers beat the Panthers 3-2.
Patrick Whelly and Ralph Luna each had a pair of hits for the No. 4-seeded Pioneers. Whelly hit a solo home run in the top of the first inning off Klovstad to give East Bay a brief 1-0 lead.
Chapman will face No. 2 seed Trinity (Tex.) in a winner’s bracket game on Thursday at 7 p.m. Cal State East Bay will face Wednesday winner George Fox (Ore.) at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday and would be eliminated with a loss.
