DRAG'S SHUTOUT ELIMINATES GEORGE FOX
ORANGE, Calif. - Chapman University RHP Devin Drag pitched a complete-game shutout as the top-seeded host Panthers defeated George Fox University (Ore.) 3-0 in the NCAA Division III Baseball West Region championship at Hart Park on Wednesday night. The loss eliminated No. 5-seeded George Fox from the tournament, ending its season with a 30-11 record.
Drag scattered seven hits and struck out five for his first shutout and third complete game of the year. His 14th win of the season (14-0) set a new school (Division III) record for victories in a season. It was also his 28th career win, tying him with two-time All-American Buddy Klovstad for the school record.
Chapman (36-5) scratched across a run in the first inning when Ryan Cavan doubled and scored on a Tyler Dean groundout. In the fourth inning, Kurt Yacko doubled home a run and scored on an RBI single by Jake Hurst. The Panthers did not record a hit from the fifth inning on, but the offense was enough for them to win their season-high ninth straight game. Yacko led Chapman with a 2-for-3 performance.
It was George Fox's second defeat of the day, having lost to Texas-Dallas 5-3 on Wednesday morning. The Bruins biggest threat came in the seventh when they put runners on first and third with one out, but Drag struck out the next two batters to end the inning. Nic Chapin had a pair of hits for the Bruins. It was the first shutout George Fox has suffered since 2004.
No. 1 seed Chapman will face No. 4 Texas-Dallas on Thursday at 4 p.m. in a winner's bracket contest.
