I must first render my heartfelt congratulations to the class of 2013 and all of our transfer students! As you now begin or continue the steps toward everything you’ve ever hoped for and dreamed of, I wish you many bright days on the finely-groomed lawns of Chapman. We have embarked, yet again, upon a new beginning. Albeit Chapman is phenomenal, it’s phenomenal because every year a new class of students arrive who change expectations, challenge the status-quo, and stretch in every way what it means for our university to be a vibrant agent of hope, beacon for change, and hotbed of intellectual creativity. With this newness may come the burden to be great. I can tell you that your student government shares this burden. But I dare say that we must not shy away from this. We must engage it with the most unabashed courage and the utmost humility. That is, the courage that our unique gifting and character can in fact make a mark on Chapman, however big or small; yet that even with all our good graces having the humility to let Chapman make its mark on us.We, in Associated Students, will not shy away from this burden. Instead, we will move in the strength of the student voice and an overactive imagination of limitless bounds. We will move forward understanding that our university’s power lies in the extent to which student concerns are heard and needs are met. We encourage you to help us. Meeting the challenge to be great this year calls for a united student front. It calls for recognizing that our light within shines brighter if we band together. Should you be interested in student government while at Chapman, I encourage you to browse through the Associated Students website. I must say that in addition to serving as President of the Black Student Union and an executive board member in my fraternity, student government has given me some of my most cherished memories at Chapman. Hopefully, you will give it the opportunity to have the same effect on you. In the Panther Spirit, Jonathan M. Johnson |
