Elections FAQ
How do I vote? Voting takes place online here. To log in, click on the "vote now" banner that appears during election week. The official polling location is the Jazzmans café in the Beckman Hall. During the election period the computers in Jazzmans café are reserved for students voting in the AS elections only.
What is the term of office? The term of office is for one academic year. Senators elected in the spring serve their term in during the current school year. Senators elected in the spring serve their term during the following fall/spring academic year.
What positions are available? FALL During the fall elections there are five (5) Senate seats available. In Fall 2008, there will be 6 positions available as one elected Senator will be unable to serve due to a class conflict.
SPRING In the spring elections the following positions are available: AS President, Vice President for House, Vice President for Senate, seven (7) AS Senate, Chapman Radio Advisory Committee and Chapman Newspaper Advisory Committee.
Who may run for a senate seat? Senators must be enrolled as a full time student at Chapman University’s Orange Campus each semester in office, must maintain a minimum 2.75 grade point average and must not be on probation within the university conduct system.
Who may run for AS President or either VP position? The AS President and two VP's make up the AS Executive council. Candidates for a executive council position must be enrolled as a full time student at Chapman University’s Orange Campus each semester in office, must maintain a minimum 2.9 grade point average and must not be on probation within the university judicial system. In addition, candidates for any AS Executive Council position are required to have one year of experience in House, Senate, Cabinet or Campus Peer Conduct Board.
What’s the purpose of Senate? AS Senate is the primary legislative body of the Associated Students at Chapman University. The job of the Senate is to represent student opinion on issues that affect every aspect of student life at Chapman. For further explanation of these responsibilities please see Article VI of the Associated Student Bylaws
When does Senate meet? Associated Students Senate meets every Tuesday from 11:30-1:00 in Argyros Forum 205. Meetings are open to all students and students are encouraged to attend meetings of contact senators with comments or concerns.
What does the VP for Senate do? The Vice President for Senate is responsible for overseeing and conducting senate meetings. The VP for Senate is also responsible for acting as a liaison between Senate and the AS Executive council. The VP for Senate is also responsible for notifying the Senate and Executive council of all Senate sessions and all relevant internal AS and Senate matters including but no limited to Membership Changes, Budgetary concerns, Changes to office policies and procedures. Further explanation of the responsibilities of the VP for Senate is outlined in Article IV Section C of the AS Constitution.
What does the VP for House of Representatives do? The Vice President for House is responsible for overseeing and conducting House meetings. The VP for House is also responsible for acting as a liaison between House and the AS Executive Council. The VP for House is also responsible for notifying the House and Executive council of all House sessions and all relevant internal AS and House matters including but no limited to Membership Changes, Budgetary concerns, Changes to office policies and procedures.
