Bachelor of Fine Arts in Studio Art

Area of Study:  Drawing and Painting

Curriculum
Drawing and painting at Chapman are taught with the goal of providing students with a contemporary repertoire of technique, history, and theory from which they may create their own contributions to the medium’s ongoing story.  Instruction in acrylic, oil and other paint and drawing media is combined with reading and discussion of art theory and current issues.  Small classes allow the personalized attention student artists require to refine individual styles, make informed conceptual choices, and develop abilities in critical evaluation of contemporary art.  Students are provided with a foundation of traditional technique from which experimental and innovative approaches proceed. As contemporary art often takes the form of multimedia works, painting students often create pieces in which the painted or drawn image is combined with other art media such as collage, photography, drawing, sculpture, computer-generated imagery, or installation.

Facilities
Drawing and painting classes are offered in the studios of the Moulton Center.  Ceramics, sculpture, photography and computer labs are located in the same building and are available to drawing and painting students who choose to pursue a multimedia approach to art production.  Students have 24-hour access to the facility.
