Thoughts from a few of Chapman's Scholarship recipients

Cameron LaceyCameron Lacy ’11, Reno, Nevada

Theatre

During the past year alone, Cameron has played the central role of Albert Einstein in the campus production of Steve Martin’s Picasso at the Lapin Agile, helped direct a pair of one-act plays at Chapman and worked at multiple internships with professional theatre companies. What’s more, Cameron has assumed leadership roles with the student-run a cappella group Soundcheck, in his fraternity and as president of the Coalition of Artistic Students in Theatre (CAST). In recognition of his contributions, he earned the Albert Schweitzer Spirit of Service Award from the Leadership and Organizational Studies program.

When he came to Chapman four years ago, Cameron’s passion was acting and he couldn’t see himself anywhere but at center stage. Now he says he feels prepared to take on the theatre world in any number of roles, from actor to director, stage manager to perhaps even the founder of his own theatre company. “Though acting remains a huge passion,” he says, “it’s not the only thing that fills my cup. My Chapman experience has been collaborative, engaging and in many ways amazing. Chapman has been the perfect place to learn and grow.”

Shauna FlemingShauna Fleming ’11, Orange, California

Public Relations

Even in high school, Shauna knew she wanted to make a difference in people’s lives. So she founded A Million Thanks, a grassroots effort to generate 1 million letters of gratitude to U.S. troops serving overseas. With help from friends at Chapman, Shauna has expanded the campaign over the past four years, long ago passing the 3 million mark for letters, emails and texts. Her new effort is Wounded Soldier’s Wish, which seeks to help service members overcome the effects of war. In addition at Chapman, Shauna has served as an aide at new-student Orientation and as a Chapman Ambassador, assisting at public events and special occasions.

Some of Shauna’s most memorable experiences came during her Semester at Sea, when she “learned first-hand what it means to be a global citizen.”  Shauna adds that both her shipboard learning experience, which took her to nations all over the globe, and her time at Chapman have nurtured her dream to launch her own cause-related marketing and public relations firm. “I don't think anyone can realize the true impact of these experiences until they get the opportunity,” she says. “I’m profoundly grateful for all of my learning experiences at Chapman. For me, they’ve been life-changing."
