Professor Pat See knows how to educate and inspire her students. Just ask Chris ’02 and Melissa (Powell) Eggleton“We want to credit Professor See for the success of our relationship,” says Melissa. “We like to say that we learned everything we needed to know about marriage from her.”

Taking Their Lessons to Heart

During their sophomore year at Chapman, each enrolled into Professor See’s sociology 204 course, “Marriage and the Family.”

Little did they realize how fateful it was to meet in this particular class.

Chris and Melissa met and quickly became friends. But it wasn’t until their two best friends, Chris Retzer ’01 and Molly (Doilney) Retzer ’02, set them up on a blind date that they saw each other in a different light. They’ve been inseparable since.

Love is in the Air: An Uplifting Engagement

After dating for years, it was time to tie the knot. On a flight to Park City, Utah, Chris conspired with the plane’s crew to aid in his marriage proposal to Melissa. Like most passengers, she was tuning out the pilot’s announcement until she heard her name.

“I had no clue to what was going on. I thought that there had been a family emergency.” All of a sudden, the movie screens lowered to show a video montage Chris put together to the couple’s favorite song, Tim McGraw’s “You’re My Best Friend.” Chris brought Melissa up to the front of the plane and proposed.

They were married in 2004 and had a baby boy named Zachary last June. Today the happy family lives in Park City.
