Mamie (Yong) Maywhort Member-at-Large Class: 1978 Degree: BA Major: Business Administration/Economics Term Expires: 05/31/09
Mamie (Yong) Maywhort, a 1978 graduate of the Argyros School of Business and Economics, states that her experience with Chapman University is largely responsible for much of her professional success; and attributes her ability to understand her “debits” from her “credits” to President Doti, who was her accounting professor.
Upon graduation, Mamie entered the banking profession, but later changed to accounting in the private sector. She served as the Assistant Controller for The Reading Game, today known as America Learning Center, Inc. and is Controller and Administrator for a MRI Radiology medical group.
In 1993, Mamie founded Total Business Solutions and outsourced herself to different companies that required the services of a Chief Financial Officer, Human Resources Director, and Business Administrator.
Today, Mamie is heavily involved in serving her community. She is the CFO of Homefront America, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that she co-founded that assists the families of deployed military service members. One of her most recent projects with the organization has been to sponsor 19 military dependent “At Risk Teens” (or “Project ARK”) on a leadership conference to learn about our Nation’s heritage and the positive values of our military services.
In addition to her Chapman degree, Mamie also holds a teacher’s credential in Vocational Education from California State University, Long Beach. Mamie and her husband are long time supporters of the University. In 1996, they created a bequest to establish the Mamie and Adam Maywhort Endowed Scholarship to support Chapman business students. Since then, they have added to the scholarship fund by creating subsequent deferred gift annuities. They are also members of The Heritage Society, and contributors to Beckman Hall.
A multimedia room in the Onnolee Elliott Library of Science and Technology (3rd Floor of the Leatherby Libraries), was named in honor of both Adam and Mamie Yong Maywhort, who have together worked to enrich the lives of Chapman students, faculty, and alums through their generosity. In her own words, Mrs. Maywhort states, "Somebody who went before me helped me," says Maywhort, "Now we have to help the next generation. This is something we need to do.”
If there is one thing Mamie would like every Chapman student to remember on graduation day is “don’t forget your roots.” “Honestly, giving back to Chapman has been such a joy for us because we know we are getting a huge return on our investment.”
