WILKINSON COLLEGE > English > Prospective Students Wilkinson College of Letters & Sciences

Literature is one of the most extensive and nuanced chronicles of the ongoing process of human self-understanding. English faculty encourage their students to read sensitively and deeply, and to search for the ways in which their lives can be enriched by humankind’s literary record. Writing courses give students the skills and practice they need to write with clarity and intellectual rigor. Literature courses both provide students with detailed knowledge of cultural traditions and foster the desire to explore related fields of study.

With their focus on critical thinking, analytical reading, and effective writing, English degree programs provide a foundation for success in most professions. English programs are also useful for students who pursue a double major or want to include one as a minor; such students combine English with fields such as film & tv, business, pre-law, social work, pre-med, or psychology. English alumni have gone on to become stockbrokers, copy editors, advertising executives, software developers, reporters, public school teachers, college professors, and (of course) writers.
