Former President of Spain Jose Maria Aznar to Visit Campus
• The visit follows an academic symposium on Spain and includes a meeting with students who have researched his presidency and a gala dinner.

• Chapman will present its 2004 Global Citizen Medal to Aznar at the gala.

ORANGE, Calif., April 30, 2004 – For the third time, Chapman University will host a former president of a nation when it presents its Global Citizen Medal to former President of Spain Jose Maria Aznar.

Aznar follows former U.S. presidents Bush and Ford in receiving the medal, which recognizes positive and lasting contributions by global leaders.

The visit includes two events that follow an academic symposium. Precise time and location details to be announced:

Friday, May 14 – Academic Symposium: “Spain and Her Role in the World”
This event is free and open to the public; media may attend and cover. Aznar will NOT be in attendance.
• Keynote address by former (as of last week) secretary of state for foreign affairs Ramon Gil-Casares.
• Three panels of academicians and Spanish business leaders discussing contemporary politics, Spanish history and U.S./Spanish commercial ties.

Saturday, May 15, 3:45 p.m. -- Student Event with President Aznar
The event is free and open to the public; media may attend and cover.
• Five Chapman undergraduate students – a three-member team from the School of Business and Economics, a political science major and a history major – will present their research directly to President Aznar, who will respond to each. The research covers economic, historical and political topics.
• News conference – following the one-hour student event, reporters will have the opportunity to talk with President Aznar and the students.

Saturday, May 15, evening – Gala dinner and presentation of Global Citizen Medal
Tickets required for guests. Media may attend and cover.
• A black-tie reception and dinner, which raises funds for student scholarships.
