Dean's Message to Prospective Students
A Bold, Brave Journey Transforming Schools by Developing Educators as Leaders Donald N. Cardinal, Ph.D. Dean, School of Education
Our mission in the School of Education is to change the world by transforming schools through the development of critical scholarship and skillful leadership. We inspire and respect individuals, and we promote the excitement of, and thirst for, learning and justice.
It is a quest rooted deeply in the rich tradition of Chapman University. Since 1861, when the first class met in the basement of Woodland Christian Church, and in 1879 when Hesperian College (our original name) first began instructing students to be educators, the institution has been dedicated to inspiring and equipping individuals to lead inquiring, ethical and productive lives as global citizens.
Changing the world through education is no small task. It is a bold and brave journey, especially in today's turbulent world. Most importantly, the first step toward this goal begins right here with an inspired faculty who are local and national leaders in their respective areas, along with innovative and relevant curriculum and programs that truly prepare our students to be agents of change in our schools.
