Sustainable Initiatives at Chapman
Buildings and Structures
Communication and Outreach
Paperless student tuition billing In 2003, the financial aid office became the first Chapman office to go "paperless." This action eliminated receipt and storage of more than 300,000 sheets of paper annually. The office removed over 50 filing cabinets making more workspace available. In 2006, electronic correspondence was initiated to enrolled students.
- Human Resources Open Enrollment
- Commencement coorespondence
The Academic Events desk in the Office of the Chancellor communicates with approximately 1,500 potential graduates several times per year to facilitate their participation in commencement ceremonies. In 2006, Chapman became one of the first universities in the US to implement an online response form and electronic database to track student attendance, eliminating hundreds of paper sheets and many hours of manual processing of forms. By 2009, all paper correspondence was eliminated. All commencement information is sent to students by e-mail and via a website.

Purchasing
- preferred policy for Energy Star appliances/equipment
Effective January 1, 2009, purchases of departmental office equipment items including but not limited to photocopiers, fax machines, printers, scanners, and computers will require the items to carry the ENERGY STAR designation (www.energystar.gov). ENERGY STAR qualified imaging equipment delivers the same performance as less efficient, conventional equipment and is, on average, 25% more efficient.
- recycled paper products become standard
Effective January 1, 2009, Chapman University Purchasing will fill all standard request for copy, printer, and colored paper with the purchse of products containing less than or equal to 30% post-consumer recycled content. Recycled paper is available in a wide range of colors, weights, and styles, including the brightest whites. Recycled content papers now share the same printing and performance characteristics as their virgin equivalent. In addition, recycled products are priced competitively with those made from virgin materials and in some cases are even cheaper. Requests for non-recycled paper may still be made provided the circumstances warrant non-recycled paper.
Recycling
- External recycling bins
- internal recycling bins
Effective January 1, 2009, all large camus events, whether individual or recurring, that require the completion of a "Application for Use of Facilities" form must request equal numbers of recycling containers and trash containers for their event. During the event, proper monitoring of the recycling containers (insuring that efforts are being made to recycle properly, emptying the recycling container into the correct receptable when full) is required by both the event organizer(s) and the operations manager overseeing the event.
Sodexo
- Food and Beverages - "Sodexo encourages participation and growth opportunities for local farmers and requires that its produce suppliers use best efforts to provide developmental assistance to 'local' farmers. Accordingly, the distributor represents to Sodexo that locally grown products shall be included in its portfolio of products offered to customers and delivered to the accounts when in season to the extent such local pruducts are available. Sodexo defines 'local' as farmers witin the same state or geographic region."
