Hiring Students
Interviewing CandidatesScreen candidates Look through applications and resumes for the most qualified students. Call the students to set up interviews. Ask them to bring their class schedules and dress appropriately.
Conduct interviews Ask questions of the students that clearly cover their qualifications. Consider including someone else from your office in the interview, so you will have a second opinion.
Check the student's Work/Study status You may want to know whether a student was awarded Work/Study. If the student does not know if they have a Work/Study award, have the student contact Financial Aid to confirm their award package. You may also contact our office to verify an award.
Make your final selection/Complete SEF After deciding on the student you would like to have hired, fill out the appropriate SEF for their position (please contact our office if you do not have the correct SEF). Make sure to indicate the student's name and ID number; the desired pay rate and pay type (e.g., work/study or graduate assistant); the intended effective date; and all appropriate signatures.
Having your Candidate HiredSend student with SEF to Student Employment Services Give the completed SEF to the candidate so they can bring it to the Student Employment office to complete their paperwork. When your selected candidate arrives at Student Employment with a completed SEF, we can begin the hiring process.
Wait for hiring approval from Student Employment Services After approval by Student Employment Services, your candidate officially becomes an employee in your department. Do not allow the student to incur any hours until you have received approval notification.
Notify the student that they may begin work Contact your employee to let them know they have been hired to work for you. Decide on their first day of work and arrange a work schedule.
