How to Enroll:
- Follow the instructions given here. You may also pick up one of the brochures entitled “Internship Practicum in Psychology” which are available at the top of the Practicum display next to the drinking fountain on the main floor of Smith Hall. There you will also find information regarding job sites that may interest you.
- Discuss with your psychology Faculty Internship Advisor your interest in a “hands on” experience in some area of your interest.
- You will need to have three items in order to proceed further: An Internship Enrollment Form, an Intern Responsibility Form and an Internship Learning Agreement Form. These may be picked up at the Psychology office or at the Career Development Center in Argyros Forum 303.
- Contact a psychology faculty person to supervise your internship.
- Decided what location or locations might interest you.
- Call the facility which seems to interest you the most and identify yourself as a Chapman University student interested in interning. Ask if they can use volunteers and what one would be doing in that location. If you are interested, ask for an appointment. Take the Internship Learning Agreement Form with you, and if the position seems to be something you would like, have the employer fill out section “C” of the form. If you want time to consider this location before making a decision, indicate this during the interview. Be aware that the facilities that interest you are not obligated to provide an intership site for you; it is a service they provide for you if you fit into their program needs.
- Return to your faculty internship supervisor so that section “B” can be completed. This is only to be done by you Faculty Internship Advisor. At this time the student needs to decide about taking the course Pass/No Pass or for a grade. Students opting for a grade need to fill out the Change of Grading System Form, and have it signed by the Faculty Internship Advisor.
- From there take all three forms to the Career Development Center on the third floor of Argyros Forum. They have some further information you need in order to complete you enrollment. The Career Development Center will register you for you internship and this completes your Internship registration.
- Pass/No Pass is the standard grading for this course. Opting for a letter grade can be chosen, but the student needs to be aware of the following procedure: When your completed forms are received at the Career Development Center it will be several days before your registration is recorded at the Registrar’s Office. Your Change of Grade Form cannot be recorded until this time. Allow three or four days, maybe a week, beforeturning in your Change of Grade Form to the Registrar’s Office.
Late Enrollment: This is not recommended because a full 14 weeks provide the best learning-intergrative experience. Under an emergency situation a student may register as late as the fifth week. For late enrollment the student needs to get a Petition from the Registrar’s Office or from the Career Development Center. Contact Dr. Bullock about this matter.
Distant Internships: These are internships taking place away from the Orange campus; they may be out of the Chapman locale, out-of-state or abroad. All of the above mentioned elements for enrollment are required. An internship site at a distance obviously requires an additional degree of planning and responsibility which the student must be prepared to assume.
The psychology department of the university can only assume responsibility for supervision from a distance. All other elements involving an internship at a distance are totally the responsibility of the student. Only students who have displayed a significant degree of responsible behavior will be approved for this course. Contact Dr. Bullock for details.
*Academic Center Students need to consult with the Center Director regarding this course. The procedure for enrolling for this course is more involved than enrollment for a lecture course. The step outlined above provide instructions which will help smooth out the enrollment process. Enrollment in Academic Centers does not require the first two forms mentioned above. It requires only the Internship Learning Agreement Form.
Chapman University does not provide insurance for student interns, so please talk with your employer and insure that you are covered at your work site.
