About the Clinic

Established in 1965 by faculty and students concerned about helping families and individuals affected by the Vietnam War, the Frances L. Smith Community Clinic has grown into a well-respected training facility offering psychological treatment services to the local community. Under the auspices of the Psychology Department of Chapman University, a WASC-accredited institution, the Clinic operates as a non-profit clinic for individuals, couples, families and children.

The Clinic offers treatment for a variety of mental health issues and relationship concerns. The focus is on marriage and family therapy as a way of helping both individuals and families with a variety of issues, including: relationship problems, child behavior problems, parenting issues, trauma, grief and loss, life transitions, chronic illness, mental illness and the impact on the family, and other hardships of modern life.

Therapy helps strengthen relationships, sometimes using a family therapy approach and at other times modalities more suited to the needs of the individual. Clinic therapists apply the latest research, theories and methods in individual, family, couple and child therapy under close supervision of experienced supervisors. In addition, the Clinic conducts research on family relationships and other clinical issues.
