Connecting students to prestigious institutions Matthew Strand, a senior studying math and computer science, is visiting the National Center for Biotechnology Information this month, thanks to some help from Chapman faculty. Strand will meet with researchers and attend research meetings to discuss the latest and greatest in comparative analysis of biomolecular structures.

President of Korea University visits Chapman The president of Korea University, Ki-Su Lee, visited Chapman University on June 27 to discuss a variety of partnerships across both institutions, which include undergraduate exchange programs, collaborations between departments and centers, and visits by scholars between the two universities. It was the first time a Korean university president has visited Chapman.

2009 Faculty Honors and Awards Announced Chapman University has announced its close-of-academic-year honors for its faculty, including the highest award given annually to a faculty member, the Wang-Fradkin Professorship, and the four Valerie Scudder Awards for achievements in teaching, scholarship and advisement.

Menas Kafatos and Dimitar Ouzounov visit Greece to collaborate in hazard areas Menas Kafatos, founding dean of the Schmid College of Science, and Dimitar Ouzounov, Ph.D., associate professor of geophysics, both members of the Center of Excellence in Earth Observing, visited Greece in March to develop collaborations with Greek institutions in hazards areas of interest to both California and Greece, namely fires and earthquakes.

Environmental Science Class Celebrated Earth Day, April 22, 2009 Dr. R.P. Singh, Professor, Earth System Science and Remote Sensing, teaches ESCI 101- Introduction to Environmental Science. The course is taken by 30 students as a general education course. Dr. Singh decided to dedicate his class on April 22, 2009 as “Earth Day”. The students were grouped in 10 groups and they selected 10 different topics related to Earth Planet and presented their views through colorful slides.

Press Clip: Chapman benefactor dies after battle with cancer Don Walter Schmid, a Tustin Foothills resident who loved playing games with his family and travelling, died Friday after a long battle with cancer. He was 78.
Dr. Kafatos named founding dean of Schmid College of Science Dr. Menas Kafatos will serve as the founding dean of the Schmid College of Science, effective June 1.
