10 August, 2009 Connecting students to prestigious institutions
     Matthew Strand, a senior studying math and computer science, is visiting the National
     Center for Biotechnology Information this month, thanks to some help from Chapman
     faculty. Strand will meet with researchers and attend research meetings to discuss the
     latest and greatest in comparative analysis of biomolecular structures.

Who wouldn’t want this summer research gig? Chapman University was one of the first
     groups allowed to conduct overnight studies at the new Marine Research Facility at
     Crystal Cove State Park this month. That means time at the beach!

6 July, 2009 President of Korea University visits Chapman
     The president of Korea University, Ki-Su Lee, visited Chapman University on June 27 to
     discuss a variety of partnerships across both institutions, which include undergraduate
     exchange programs, collaborations between departments and centers, and visits by
     scholars between the two universities. It was the first time a Korean university
     president has visited Chapman.

22 June, 2009 Dr. Christine Hughey and Carina Minardi presented at the ASMS Conference                                              
     Dr. Christine Hughey, Associate Professor of Chemistry, and Carina Minard (senior)
     presented a poster entitled, "Characterization of phenolic compounds in almond
     agricultural wastes by negative ion ESI LC/MS for potential nutraceutical applications".

9 June, 2009 Press Clip: Chapman fries a big fish before getting smoked in “food bowl”
     Food science students defeated a combined team from Washington State University
     and the University of Idaho  (about 36,000 students) in a difficult and bizarre College 
     Bowl trivia contest sponsored by the Institute of Food Technologists Student
     Association.

     Chapman University has announced its close-of-academic-year honors for its faculty,
     including the highest award given annually to a faculty member, the Wang-Fradkin
     Professorship, and the four Valerie Scudder Awards for achievements in teaching,
     scholarship and advisement.

     a wide diversity of institutions such as the United Nations, the World Economic Forum,
     Windsor Castle, The Vatican and to many of the principal academic establishments such
     as The Royal Society, The Smithsonian Institution, the New York Academy of Sciences,
     etc.

     Menas Kafatos, founding dean of the Schmid College of Science, and Dimitar Ouzounov,
     Ph.D., associate professor of geophysics, both members of the Center of Excellence in
     Earth Observing, visited Greece in March to develop collaborations with Greek
     institutions in hazards areas of interest to both California and Greece, namely fires and
     earthquakes.

     professor of physics, received experimental confirmation of an extraordinary
     theoretical prediction they made about the nature of quantum reality.

     Shmuel Nussinov, Ph.D. of Chapman’s Department of Physics, Computational Science
     and Engineering, published a paper titled “Model with Dynamical R-parity Breaking and

On April 17, principal investigator, Menas Kafatos, Ph.D., founding dean of Schmid
     College of Science, and co-investigator Anup Prasad were awarded a $75,000 grant
     from the Institute for Global Change.

Environmental Science Class Celebrated Earth Day, April 22, 2009
     Dr. R.P. Singh, Professor, Earth System Science and Remote Sensing, teaches ESCI
     101- Introduction to Environmental Science. The course is taken by 30 students as
     a general education course. Dr. Singh decided to dedicate his class on April 22, 2009 as
     “Earth Day”. The students were grouped in 10 groups and they selected 10 different
     topics related to Earth Planet and presented their views through colorful slides.

     As part of the Collaborative Game Design course offered by Chapman’s Department of

     game that has been entered into the 2009 Microsoft Imagine Cup Competition. The

     around the world competing to create technological solutions to some of the toughest

     Lisa Brown, Aileen Gaudinez and Michelle Creek, from the Department of Mathematics
     and Computer Science, won a meritorious award for their poster entitled “Derivatives 
     and Gradients as Tools in Digital Image Processing” in the SoCal-Nev Spring Meeting
     of the Mathematical American Association (MAA) held at California Lutheran

     Don Walter Schmid, a Tustin Foothills resident who loved playing games with his family
     and travelling, died Friday after a long battle with cancer. He was 78.
