Past Alumni  Awards

Students have been successful at obtaining prestigious national research fellowships and grants. Some recent examples are:
  • Scott Jakubowski, NASA Summer Research Fellowship 2002 – research at New Mexico Tech on extreme environments for extraterrestrial planetary life
  • Eric Dang, National Science Foundation REU Fellowship 2003 – research at USC on building laser systems to study bioorganic molecules
  • Joshua Jones, UCI GANN Fellowship 2003 – research at UCI on NMR studies of complex humic materials in natural waters
  • Matt Gartner, Outstanding Chemistry Major 2005, Awarded by Local Section of the American Chemical Society at an awards dinner
  • Samantha Galasso, Petroleum Research Fund Summer Fellowship 2005 – research at Chapman University on crude oil biodegradation; 2005 Southern California Academy of Sciences Student Research grant

Student Research

Chemistry majors at Chapman University have been successful at presenting their research at conferences. Here are some recent examples:
  • Amy Gustafson presented her research at the Southern California American Chemical Society Undergraduate Research Conference (April 2004). Her poster was titled: “Can M2 Receptors Stimulate Phospholipase C Activity?” Amy was awarded a $750 Faculty Sponsored Student Grant from Chapman University to complete this work. Dr Griffin served as her faculty advisor. Amy is currently in graduate school at the University of Wisconsin in the Department of Pharmacology.
  • Adam O’ Connor worked with Dr Clark in his junior and senior year on a field project at Doheny State Beach. He presented his research at the National Oceanic Society meeting (Hawaii 2004) and the National American Chemical Society meeting (New Orleans 2004). Adam wrote and submitted a paper to the journal of Environmental Science & Technology. Adam is now doing a Ph.D. in Earth System Science at UCI.
  • Lisa Gerlach graduated in May 2004 w/ a B.S. in chemistry and biology (double major). She is now in veterinary school at UC Davis and presented her research on estrogens in the environment with Dr. Hughey in her junior and senior years at several American Chemical Society Meetings.
  • Samantha Galasso is currently a junior B.S. chemistry major. Samantha works with Dr. Hughey on the biodegradation of crude oil acids. Samantha has presented her work at the National American Chemical in San Diego (March 2005), the Graduate Women in Science conference (March 2005), and the American Society for Mass Spectrometry Conference in San Antonio (June 2005).
  • Chris Lentini is a junior B.S. chemistry major. In 2005, Chris presented his research on local beach water quality with Drs Clark and De Bruyn at the National American Chemical Society Meeting in San Diego and the Southern California Undergraduate Research Conference. Chris plans to enter a graduate program in chemistry after graduation.
