Chair's Message
Chemistry is the study of the composition, structure and the various transformations of substances that have mass and occupy space. Chemistry is regarded as the “central science” because of its role as the gateway to other fields (science and non-science) and our daily lives. The many advances that chemistry has produced is apparent in every sphere of life including medicine (the development of Hepatitis B vaccine, cancer treatments), electronic consumer goods, automobiles, flavors, plastics, just to name a few. Our Department offers BS degree in chemistry (professional with environmental tract) and B.S. degree in biochemistry; three disciplines with common characteristics. All our faculty members are dedicated and hard-working professionals with a knack for simplifying the most difficult concepts, thus making learning fun, exciting and enjoyable. Chapman’s core value of “personalized education” is enhanced in our department by engaging students in cutting-edge research with faculty hence giving students the unique opportunity to gain much needed hands-on experience in research that can lead to publications in peer-reviewed chemical literature or to presentations at local, regional, national, and international symposia and conferences. A degree in chemistry or biochemistry from Chapman University is one from the select undergraduate institutions nationwide that is just the “right size” for education with a special touch. So, why should you be a chemistry or biochemistry major at Chapman University? Because it is the logical step to take towards your career goals as our programs are custom-tailored to your interest and offered in small-size classes usually with no more than 40 students at the beginning levels to even smaller classes of 10 to 15 at the upper levels. Laboratory classes range from 15 to 20 students. All our classes and laboratories are taught by professors (no teaching assistants). Our faculty members embody a diverse group of excellent professionals with expertise in analytical chemistry, physical chemistry, inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry, and biochemistry. Accordingly, it is with great pleasure that the faculty, staff and students of the department of chemistry extends to you a warm and heartfelt welcome. We sincerely hope that your sojourn with us meets with success. Please do not hesitate to ask for help if there is anything we can do to make your stay in the department pleasant, safe and successful. We look forward to meeting you at anytime and would cherish the opportunity to guide you through a brilliant career in the chemical sciences. Peter A. Iyere |
