Student awards in the Biological Sciences Department
Biology majors at Chapman University have been successful at getting prestigious national research fellowships and grants. Here are some recent examples:
- Margo Smith won a National Nanotechnology Infrastructure Network Research Experience for Undergraduates research award for the summer of 2004. She competed against 561 applicants and was one of 72 awardees. She will spend this summer at the University of Minnesota working with Dr. David Pui on a project entitled, “Directional Growth of Neurons on Nanoscale Surface Gradients of Biomolecules.”
- Ryan Van Ramshorst has received an American Heart Association Undergraduate Summer Research Award. He will be spending his summer conducting research related to cardiovascular disease in a university research lab located in the western United States. He is waiting to hear where he will be placed.
In addition, the following biology majors were also recognized for their accomplishments and contribution to Chapman University and the community at large at a May 7 banquet attended by faculty of the Sciences departments and the Dean of Wilkinson College, Dr. Roberta Lessor:
- Outstanding Senior in Department of Biological Sciences: Julie-Anne Velay, Amanda Mintier and Heather James.
- Outstanding Leadership Award – Student Scientific Society: Moung Hyun Gustafson.
