About Us
Reputation
When you choose Chapman you choose a nationally recognized comprehensive university that offers liberal arts and professional programs. The strength of Chapman’s reputation is evident in the success of the university, its students and its faculty. We are listed on the Templeton Honor Roll for Character Building Colleges and U.S. News and World Report ranks Chapman in the top tier of western universities.
In the past five years, Chapman students have been named Truman Scholars, Coro Fellows, NCAA Athletic All-Americans and to the USA Today All-USA Academic First Team. Our student newspaper, The Panther, took first place in a competition sponsored by The American Scholastic Press Association.
Personal Instruction
Chapman’s small classes guarantee personal attention. The university-wide student to professor ratio of 14:1 encourages close-working relations between faculty and students. In the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science, the ratio is closer to 9:1. In addition, the high quality of our student body makes it possible for many students to be actively engaged in faculty research, thus further enhancing their education. Because our faculty maintain active research programs and are committed to teaching, our students enjoy a level of access to professionals that is increasingly difficult to find in higher education.
Ubiquitous Computing
Chapman provides every student with the opportunity to lease a notebook computer bundled with the software needed for academic success. For students in the ICD, Computer Science, Computer Information Systems and Math programs, this includes state-of-the-art software development platforms. In addition, Chapman’s faculty is committed to exploiting our computing infrastructure to enhance the personal instruction for which we are known. A growing number of courses in all disciplines provide 24/7 access to course material via the web, while maintaining personal contact between professors and students in traditional classes.
State-of-the-Art Facilities
The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science is housed in Beckman Hall. This state-of-the-art building includes lecture halls equipped with instructors’ computers, power supplies and internet ports at each student chair (laptops in class are encouraged), and a laboratory designed for the computer science and integrated circuit design programs. A general purpose computer lab and six instructional labs are housed in the new Leatherby Libraries.
Faculty Research
The department's quickly growing faculty, in addition to demonstrating a commitment to personal instruction, is distinguished for research in several areas of computing and mathematics. These include: signal processing, statistical analysis of risk, simulation of continuous models, theoretical computer science and mathematics education. The department faculty are eager to involve undergraduates in their own projects as well as to facilitate each student's interests through independent studies, special courses and internships wherever possible.
