Style Guides

All of your professors in the College of Educational Studies will require you to use the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association, 5th edition; however, be sure to refer to your syllabus to determine your professor’s preferred style. The following list features online style guides, documentation software, and relevant research resources.

APA DOCUMENTATION, 5TH EDITION

Research and Documentation Online: Social Sciences—Diana Hacker
Diana Hacker, whose handbook on writing is widely used, includes instructions on APA format for intext citations, the list of references, and manuscript format, with a model paper as well.

Using APA Format, 5th Edition—Purdue University OWL
Purdue's OWL provides a very helpful step-by-step tutorial on preparing papers conforming to all APA guidelines.

APA Style, 5th Edition: Electronic References—American Psychological Association
The American Psychological Association provides a useful guide for electronic citations in APA that you can trust to be complete.

APA Format Guide, University of Wisconsin, Madison
The Writing Center at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, here provides a very user-friendly guide to APA and generously acknowledges other resources online for mastering APA format.

DOCUMENTATION SOFTWARE

Bibliographic software applications allow you to organize information and format reference information into footnotes, endnotes, and bibliographies in different styles. Zotero
Zotero is a free 2.0 Firefox extension whose functionality allows writers to import references from online databases, organize references and create bibliographies.

EndNote
software is essentially a citation management software program that allows you to import references from online databases and keep personalized databases; organize references; and create bibliographies. A portal for accessing EndNote is available through the Leatherby Libraries for graduate students enrolled in Chapman’s College of Educational Studies.

NoodleBib
